As part of his climate resilience plan, Brooklyn Borough President candidate Khari Edwards proposes installing composting stations at NYCHA, senior, and affordable housing complexes. He aims to teach residents composting skills to reduce waste and promote sustainability within communities.
Flood prevention and rezoning in vulnerable areas
Edwards is committed to protecting low-lying neighborhoods like Canarsie and Bergen Beach from flooding. By working with community boards, he plans to conduct a study to assess the rezoning needs of flood-prone communities, allowing for home elevation and driveway adjustments to mitigate flood risks, particularly in areas still recovering from Superstorm Sandy.
Artistic recycling bins for a greener borough
To promote recycling while celebrating Brooklyn’s vibrant culture, Edwards plans to introduce recycling trash cans with artist-designed exteriors. The contest to create these designs would both beautify and green Brooklyn’s streets, encouraging residents to recycle.
Borough Hall as a sustainability hub
Edwards envisions Brooklyn Borough Hall as a center for energy efficiency resources. He aims to host workshops on topics like electric stoves, solar panels, and energy-efficient appliances, providing residents with hands-on guidance for sustainable living.
Seasonal flower exchanges and Farmers Markets
Edwards plans to host year-round flower exchange events and farmers markets to enhance green spaces and support local farmers. These gatherings would encourage community connections and increase access to fresh, local produce.
Improving infrastructure with green initiatives
To address lead paint and corrosion on train trestles and overpasses, Edwards aims to allocate capital funding for repainting and repairs. Additionally, he plans to collaborate with the Department of Transportation and the Mayor’s office to improve the BQE expressways, proposing tree plantings along the highways to absorb carbon monoxide and reduce pollution.
Community dumpster pilot program
Edwards wants to implement a pilot program for community dumpsters, making waste disposal more organized and convenient by providing larger, shared dumpsters in neighborhoods to reduce trash accumulation on sidewalks.
