Khari Edwards, Brooklyn Borough President candidate, aims to address gun violence by funding grassroots “cure violence” groups. Through the Borough President’s office, he plans to provide annual financial support to these organizations, empowering credible messengers to make a difference within their communities.
Creating safe spaces for youth
To reduce gang recruitment and violence, Edwards proposes the “Something To Do” program, which will create safe, free spaces for after-school activities run by nonprofits. This program would give children a safe place to spend their time, decreasing exposure to violence.
Building pathways to employment
Edwards emphasizes the importance of job opportunities as an alternative to violence. His plan includes partnerships with local businesses to create internships and job shadowing opportunities for high school students. By connecting young people with potential career paths, Edwards aims to foster a sense of purpose and reduce the appeal of gang involvement.
Supporting youth development programs
Programs like the Flatbush Leadership Academy, KAVI, and Community Alternatives are central to Edwards’s plan for giving youth a second chance and breaking cycles of violence. His proposed funding will support these initiatives, helping young people stay engaged and empowered.
Expanding youth entrepreneurship initiatives
Edwards envisions partnerships with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, Community Alternatives, and CACCI to provide youth with entrepreneurship training and business-building skills. By empowering young minds to pursue business ideas, Edwards hopes to inspire future leaders and reduce violence.
Expanding “It starts here” across Brooklyn
Edwards founded the “It Starts Here” program at Brookdale Hospital to address rising violence in East Brooklyn. As Borough President, he plans to expand this successful program to other hospitals in Brooklyn and NYC, offering additional resources to neighborhoods in need.
Establishing safety zones and cease-fire districts
To encourage peaceful dialogue, Edwards proposes creating safety zones and cease-fire districts in partnership with law enforcement, local businesses, community organizations, and churches. These areas will serve as community-led safe spaces, promoting peace and dialogue throughout Brooklyn.
